RE: Notice of Intention to Commence Legal Proceedings – Defamation, Harmful Representation, and Public Interest Concerns Regarding Mental Health Coverage

Dear Sir/Madam,

I, Sean Campbell, Founder of Mentally Interrupted Media, formally provide notice of my intention to commence legal proceedings against your respective organisations.

This action arises from ongoing and repeated publication and broadcast of news content across television, radio, and print platforms that, either explicitly or implicitly, associate criminal behaviour with individuals alleged to have mental health conditions. Such reporting, in its cumulative effect, contributes to widespread stigma and discrimination against people living with mental health challenges.

It is my position that this pattern of reporting has materially contributed to:

Reduced employment opportunities for individuals with lived mental health experience
Social exclusion, including barriers to forming personal relationships and dating
Reinforcement of harmful stereotypes within the broader Australian community

Further, there appears to be a consistent lack of balanced reporting. Positive stories of recovery, resilience, and contribution are significantly underrepresented or confined to limited observances such as Mental Health Awareness campaigns, rather than being incorporated into everyday editorial practices.

Context and Public Interest Initiative

I am currently establishing a new incorporated association, Mentally Interrupted Community Association, alongside a national online radio and television platform launching on 1 October 2026:

This initiative aims to:

Promote accurate and balanced narratives around mental health
Provide a platform for lived-experience voices
Support recovery-focused storytelling
Reduce stigma through community-led media
Demands for Resolution

To resolve this matter without litigation, I formally request:

A public and formal apology acknowledging the role of past reporting in contributing to mental health stigma
A commitment to balanced reporting, including regular inclusion of recovery-focused and positive lived-experience stories
Collaboration opportunities, including:
Participation of journalists and media personalities as contributors or volunteers
Engagement with the Mentally Interrupted Community Association
Implementation of editorial guidelines to prevent harmful generalisations linking mental illness and criminality
Deadline for Response

You are required to provide a formal written response no later than 28 May 2026.

Failure to respond or refusal to engage constructively will result in the commencement of legal proceedings without further notice.

Additional Notice

Any negative or defamatory publicity arising from this notice, including attempts to discredit this action or its intent, may result in immediate initiation of legal proceedings.

This action is pursued in the public interest to promote responsible media practices and reduce harm to individuals living with mental health challenges.

I strongly encourage your organisation to engage constructively within the timeframe provided.
